Silver Coin Values Are On the Rise

Not many investments are weathering the storm but one commodity is bucking the trend by remaining stable and actually increasing in value.

What is this mysterious investment? It’s none other than good old silver. For thousands of years, silver has been used as an economic workhorse. It has been the backbone of many currencies, a storehouse of wealth for both tradesmen and royalty, and a protective hedge against inflation for investors.

At the forefront of this “anti-trend” are silver coin values. Investing in silver coins has become one of the easiest and smartest ways of entering this market.

The demand for silver is increasing and the supply is not quite keeping up. Silver is usually produced as a by-product from mining copper or zinc; there just hasn’t been a need to actively mine for silver as of yet. But silver’s many practical applications in the field of technology are changing that.

Industrial applications for silver are bolstering its value and positioning it for a steady increase in value.Silver coins require no refining and no mining, and thus carry none of the expenses associated with those activities. They are easy to find, buy, and store. They are still affordable and accessible for even the most novice investors.

These qualities, added to the increasing demand for the metal, make silver cons a savvy investment choice.

Silver As Investments

Coin buffs and silver enthusiasts have many options for investing in silver coins. Ingots and rounds can be purchased straight from the counters of some major European banks. The simple choice is often the best choice, and two of the simplest choices for silver investing are bullion coins and junk silver coins.

Bullion Silver Coin Values

Bullion coins are those which, while they have a face value are technically currency, are really valued for the weight and purity of their metal. Their face value is usually far beneath their true value as silver. Their worth is enhanced by their appeal to coin collectors.

The American Silver Eagle is a popular example of a bullion coin that is actively collected around the world for its numismatic value and its one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver content. It is the only bullion coin guaranteed by the U.S. government for its weight and purity.

Junk Silver Coin Values

Junk silver coins are only about 90% pure compared to bullion’s 99.9%, but they are a much more affordable option for the average investor. “Junk” silver coins are the legal tender coins minted prior to 1965, before the silver itself became more valuable that the face value of the coins.

(Oddly enough, when gold and silver bullion was confiscated by the U.S. Government in the 1930's, 90% silver continued to circulate!)

Dimes, quarters, and half dollars are now sold by the bag for investments. After accounting for the precious metal lost to wear and tear, a $1,000 face value bag is said to contain 715 ounces of pure silver. This can be multiplied by the daily spot price of silver to arrive at the value of the bag. Dealers usually charge a small premium (or mark-up) over this price in order to make enough money to stay in business.
