Silver Bullion Coins Hold Long Term Value

Many people have a type of cartoon image of bullion coins that involve pirates and treachery on the open seas in their heads when they hear about silver bullion, but investing in this treasure is far more serious than that.

Bullion is a bulk quantity of a precious metal, assessed by its weight in troy ounces (abbreviated “toz” or ozt”). It can be traded on the commodities markets or stored as a hedge against inflation. Silver in particular is gaining a reputation as a stable means of protecting wealth by investing in precious metals.

Its industrial applications are helping silver maintain a steadily increasing value.

TYPES OF BULLION

Bullion comes in the form of ingots (or bars) of various weights, rounds and coins made of a particular precious metal. A coin becomes bullion when it is valued primarily for its pure precious metal rather than for its face value as legal tender. The level of purity may vary from type to type, but it should be stamped or certified on the bullion in some way. A 99.9% purity level is typical.

  • Ingots: Ingots are precious metals shaped into small bars. These are usually marked with a hallmark, the weight of the ingot in troy ounces and a serial number. They are available in several common, standard sizes and in odd weights.
  • Rounds: Rounds combine the traits of both ingots and coins. They are coin-shaped discs generally produced in either fractions of the troy ounce or full troy ounce weights. They are not minted as coins and have no value as currency. These are also usually marked or certified for their weight.
  • Coins: Coins are one of the most popular types of bullion to purchase. Their value as a metal is enhanced by their appeal to coin collectors as markers of history and objects of beauty. They may be marked by weight, guaranteed by their issuing government, or simply known by their reputation.
  • Buying Bullion

Ingots, rounds and silver bullion coins can be bought at the counters of major banks in some countries like Switzerland or Liechtenstein. In the U.S., silver bullion coins can be purchased from banks, brokerage houses, from dealers, or private collectors. A popular choice of silver bullion in the U.S. is the Silver Eagle silver dollar.

The Silver Eagle has a face value of $1 U.S. but sells at a much higher price, owing as much to its beauty as to its high silver content. The Eagle is .999 ounces of pure, fine silver with a touch of copper added to ensure strength and durability.
