Silver Bullion Coin: A Step Toward Financial Freedom

Bullion refers to a bulk quantity of precious metal that is valued for its mass and its purity. It can take the shape of an ingot, or be round, or be minted into a coin. A silver bullion coin is not the same as a “junk” coin. Junk coins are U.S. legal tender minted before 1965. These coins contain 90% pure silver but, unlike bullion, have no value as collectors’ items.

Silver bullion is still a coin with a face value, but they are valued primarily for their purity as a precious metal. The purity of the metal may vary a bit, but 99.9% pure is typical of the coins on today’s market. The beauty and status of a silver bullion coin as currency only enhances their value to numismatists.

BULLION: THE INGOT, THE ROUND, AND THE COIN

Bullion can be purchased in three main forms. All are measured in troy ounces, the standard measure for precious metals.

  • Ingot: bar shaped, available in many standard and non-standard sizes.
  • Rounds: disc-shaped like a coin, but with no face value as currency.
  • Coins: minted as legal tender with a face value, but traded at the much higher price of the metal.

    • The Troy Ounce

    The weight or mass of precious metals is expressed in a standard unit of measure called the troy ounce. Abbreviated “ozt,” the troy ounce is equal to 480 grains. This makes the international troy ounce weigh exactly 31.1034768 grams, slightly more than the standard U.S. ounce.

    British coins still retain their names from the time of Henry II, when the troy ounce was the standard for currency. A pound coin was literally one troy pound of sterling.

    Coins can be purchased today from any number of sources, both online and local. Dealers and coin collectors’ shows offer many different types of bullion for sale. Private auctions usually handle only the higher end of the market but online auctions are marketing all types of coins.

    Buyers should be very careful, no matter what source they choose. They should look very closely at all photographs and research the current value of a bullion coin before buying. Finding a dealer with an accreditation or membership through one of the major associations will instill more confidence in their products.

    There are enough options to keep a buyer busy for a while but the benefits of doing the proper homework far outweigh the difficulty of researching a purchase thoroughly.
