The Silver Eagle coin has been in production since 1986. It features two images borrowed from historic coins: “Walking Liberty,” designed by A.A. Weinman and first seen on the 1917 half dollar; a classic heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows designed by John Mercanti. Among numismatists, it is widely considered the most beautiful coin ever made and is the most popular bullion coin collected.

The Cost Of A Silver Eagle

As a bullion coin, the Silver Eagle has the face value of $1 in U.S. currency but its true value comes from the 99.93% pure silver from which it is made. The remaining percentage is copper, used to ensure the lasting durability and surface integrity of the coin. This content and its purity, along with a weight of one troy ounce, are all guaranteed by the U.S. government. This is a claim no other coin can make.

The cost of an Eagle varies depending on the seller and the current price, called the spot price, of silver. Sellers will normally charge the spot price plus a premium (another name for a dealer mark-up) for a bullion coin.

Making An Eagle

The U.S. Mint at West Point mints these lovely uncirculated coins to meet demand. The Mint provides them to brokerages, banks and coin dealers but not to individual buyers. Proof coins, however, are available to the public and are the only Eagles that can be purchased by an individual directly from the U.S. Mint.

As a proof, the rounds are loaded by hand in to the presses and minted using a special process involving special dies and multiples strikes per coin. The result is an exquisite Silver Eagle coin with a mirror-like background and softly detailed but well-defined raised areas. The coins are removed by gloved hands and immediately sealed to protect their perfection from becoming marred in any way.
