A BIT OF HISTORY

[silver coins]

Silver dollars were the first dollar coin issued; minting began in 1794. In the early days of the U.S., when it was still an assortment of colonies, the coins of many countries flowed through it as legal tender.

Thomas Jefferson was a fan of dollar coins. His letters show that he encouraged the newly formed U.S. to mint coins similar to other countries to instill trust in the government.

Somehow, despite the beauty of the designs and the inherent value of the silver, they never really caught on as a type of currency. Americans have simply favored the paper dollar over the coin.

In an ironic twist, silver dollars have caught on like wildfire as collectable coins. They are collected more frequently than any other coin in the world.

SOME NOTED SILVER DOLLAR COINS

Some coins are a better investment than others. Rare coins and those with rich histories usually carry a higher premium. There are many examples of rare and valuable coins but a few are especially worth noting.

  • The 1804 Silver Dollar: There are actually no dollars dated 1804 that were really struck in that year. The coins were printed in 1834 as gifts for Asian rulers in hopes of gaining favorable trade status. It was not known at that time that the 1804 date had never been used. Only 15 of these “mistakes” are known to exist.
  • Morgan Silver Dollars: Named for their designer, George T. Morgan, these are the most popular silver dollar coins to date. The 1921 edition is particularly well-known. The Morgan has a large market and higher grade coins are considered excellent “investment” coins. Morgans have well-established values on the exchanges.
  • The Peace Dollar: Introduced in 1921, this special dollar was minted to commemorate the treaties that ended World War I, The War to End All Wars. This is a case of a coin’s monetary value being closely tied to its historical value.
  • BUYING COINS

Investment coins are easily bought and sold. Local dealers and online sources have made investing in silver a simple process. There are many different options today and buyers should take the time to do the appropriate research on the best method of purchase and the best coins to purchase for their own portfolios.
